Career coaching tools are resources and instruments that career coaches might use to support and guide individuals in their career development. These tools can help clients gain insights, set goals, make informed decisions, and take action towards achieving their desired career outcomes. Here are a few examples of career coaching tools:
Listening: I want you to be heard. I want to give you a space to talk freely and honestly. In order to create the change you want in your career I want to hear about your journey to where you are today. The highs and lows. Warts and all. This helps me to understand you better so that we can use that knowledge to shape the future together.
Support & Challenge: A core aspect of coaching is the ability to challenge you out of your comfort zone and into the stretch zone where we know great change can happen. This is always balanced with the support you need to feel safe. When we get this balance right you will push yourself to explore opportunities.Assessments and Inventories: Various assessments and inventories can provide valuable insights into your personality, interests, values, skills, and strengths. You may already be familiar with them. I use Tilt65.com. These tools help you understand yourself better and explore career options aligned with your preferences and strengths.
Goal Setting: Goal setting is a fundamental aspect of career coaching. Goal-setting helps you articulate your short-term and long-term career objectives. These conversations typically include prompts to identify specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals. They facilitate the creation of action plans and help track progress. Coaching comes into it’s own when it is used to remove all the reasons why a goal might not feel achievable!
Skills and Competencies Assessments: Skills and competencies assessments allow you to evaluate your current skill sets and identify areas for improvement. They can help you identify gaps in your skills and competencies and create development plans to enhance your marketability and career prospects.
Values and Motivations Exercises: Understanding personal values and motivations is crucial for career decision-making. Together we can identify your core values and what motivates you in your work. This self-awareness means you can align your career choices with your values, resulting in greater job satisfaction and fulfillment.
Action Planning: Action planning is where we break down your career goals into specific action steps. We will identify milestones, identify resources needed, list potential barriers, and create a timeline for completion. A structure like this can help you stay focused as you implement your career development strategies.
Coaching Exercises: I don’t use lots of coaching exercises! I will be as creative as you need me to be in terms of what will help you. I have a few favourites which I know work and clients love them!
All I ask of you is to be open to the process and see where it takes you.
